Announcement
The Pagosa Springs Golf Club, a privately owned 27-hole, Johnny Bulla designed course that opened in 1973 and located in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, is pleased to announce a position for Superintendent. The golf course was constructed on a former cattle ranch and forested area and is nestled in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. The facility consists of: three 9-hole courses allowing for three different 18-hole combinations of play; full range; large practice green; green nursery; fairway and tee box nursery, maintenance facility and clubhouse. The turf grass varieties consist of: bent with mixed POA greens, bent and blue rye grass fairways, fine rye tees and primary roughs and sheep and native grass secondary roughs. The course is irrigated with raw water from its high quality, freshly sourced mountain water lakes and ponds. PSGC is a seasonal golf course with the primary golfing season occurring April 15 – Nov 15.

Pagosa Springs, located in Southwest Colorado, has sweeping vistas of 13,000+ foot mountain peaks, valleys, lakes, rivers, and forests and is surrounded by and gateway to millions of acres of national forests and wilderness areas. With a mild year-around mountain climate the area has become one of the last “found” Colorado destinations, growing while still maintaining a small-town feel. It is known for its vast array of outdoor activities, including: golf, alpine and cross-country skiing, snow mobile riding, fishing, rafting, boating, hunting, firearm & archery sports, hiking, biking, camping, soaking, horseback riding, flying (Stevens Field 8100 x 100-foot GA runway), atv/utv riding, soaring, ballooning, recreational vehicle camping, etc. Tourism, second homeowners, ranches, retirees, private business investment and recreation have strong economic influences and drive the local economy.
Position Summary
Oversee and hands-on application of all aspects and activities related to: the ongoing successful cultural and maintenance practices of the golf course, grounds, irrigation system and equipment; and managing an experienced dedicated staff. Experience with high elevation, 7500’-7800’, turf & turf grass management a plus. Ability to interact daily professionally and effectively with: Owners, Managers, Staff and Guests.
Major Duties and Areas of Focus
All daily activities associated with producing excellent playing conditions.
Hire, develop, train, coach and grow maintenance staff to success.
Plan and implement staffing schedules to ensure quality standards are achieved.
Successfully administer and apply turf, turf grass and plant fertilizer, wetting agent, fungicide, snow mold, herbicide, and pest programs.
Successfully implement whole tine, solid tine aeration and verticut programs.
Develop, enhance, manage, and adhere to a strong maintenance safety program.
Maintain tight security initiatives for buildings, grounds, and assets.
Manage and maintain all company safety protocols.
Protect company assets, train, and manage team to report any issues immediately.
Develop and manage annual budget with focus on appropriate cost controls.
Implement and manage maintenance operating plan.
Operate within current staff and budget.
Implement and manage company operating policies and procedures.
Supervise, direct, and manage all course improvement tasks and projects.
Supervise and direct all equipment PM and repair operations.
Research, source and order all equipment parts and installation of parts.
Work closely with General Manager on equipment needs.
Irrigation system operation, maintenance, repair, and improvement.
Manage detailed irrigation equipment preventive PM and repair programs.
Manage and ensure annual pumps inspections by pumps service provider.
Maintain and manage appropriate quality and cleanliness standards for all areas.
Identify, research and source amenities.
Manage, with GM, costs through bid process for major capital items.
Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal laws rules and regulations related to chemical and fertilizer: storage, disposal, employee safety, public safety, etc.
Manage employment activities and staff members, including but not limited to: recruitment, selection, hiring, performance evaluations, training, compensation, discipline, termination, etc.
Maintain accurate records pertaining to: schedules, water usage, course maintenance, construction activities, equipment repair, safety meetings, staff meetings, employee disciplinary actions, activities, fertilizer, chemical and pest control applications.
Efficient and timely submission of operational, financial, budgetary, and general reports.
Maintain knowledge of current and projected industry developments through continuous attention to industry periodicals and participation in relevant associations and organizations.
Maintain and manage facility with Golf Operations Manager and General Manager during winter closed months.
Adhere to all local, state, and federal laws.
Qualifications
2 or 4-year turf management degree preferred.
Class A Superintendent or above with 3+ years of successful golf course maintenance, supervisory and management experience.
Hands-On work style is key.
Experience producing excellent playing conditions.
Demonstrates experience and capability in the areas of agronomy and chemicals.
Demonstrates experience and capability in the areas of budget development, fiscal management, expense control, strategic planning, and staff management.
Demonstrates excellent leadership abilities, listening, learning and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to analyze and solve problems, efficiently handle multiple duties under pressure with minimal supervision, and work flexible hours as required including nights and weekends as necessary.
Ability to utilize staff to implement solutions to problems.
Ability to work closely with golf operations manager, pro-shop, office manager, General Manager, and owner.

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and E-Mail.
