Founded in 2001, the Detroit Sports Commission (DSC) has proven to be one of the most successful sports tourism and events organizations in the country. Today, the DSC is looking for an energetic and dynamic leader to build upon Detroit’s rich sports tradition.
The DSC is a subsidiary of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau, the oldest CVB in the United States. From its inception, the DSC has had tremendous success in hosting our nation’s premiere championships, including:

AAU Junior Olympic Games
Detroit is a sports town at its core, and the DSC serves as a primary catalyst in driving major events to the community. The DSC seeks a collaborative professional who can continue to carry the torch into the organization’s next generation.
The next leader of the Detroit Sports Commission will be asked to play a critical role in the future of sports in the Detroit region. This position will be responsible for taking a leadership role in several key areas:
Strategic visioning for the future of the DSC.
Pushing the sports tourism and events agenda of the community forward.
Positioning Metro Detroit as a strong sports tourism destination.
Serving on the Detroit Metro CVB’s executive leadership team.
Managing the DSC’s five person staff.
Facilitating success for the Detroit Sports Corp, the permanent Local Organization Committee that supports the DSC on an ongoing basis.
This position is mission critical for the Detroit community’s future. The candidate we are looking for will be stepping into a vital role for not only the DSC but the Detroit region as well.

Title: Executive Director, Detroit Sports Commission
Position Purpose: Responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive direct sales, marketing and event management program to deliver targeted volumes of sports business and athletic competitions for the Metro Detroit Region. This position works in coordination with key community stakeholders, Detroit Sports Commission staff, as well as all internal DMCVB departments, to ensure an effective and integrated marketing, sales and event management program is designed and executed to fulfill strategic objectives established by the DMCVB executive management. This position also interacts with members of the hotel and tourism community on the planning and executing of sports marketing initiatives.
Reports To: Sr. Vice President, Sales, Marketing & Sports, Dotted-line to the President & CEO
In partnership and collaboration with executive leadership, develop strategies and direct activities designed to fulfill the mission of the Detroit Sports Commission to enhance the local economy and image of metro Detroit by attracting and hosting amateur, international and professional sporting events.
In collaboration with Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau leadership, staff, partners, stakeholders and customers, direct activities designed to fulfill the DMCVB’s purpose to champion the continuous improvement of the region as a dynamic and memorable tourism destination.
Develops, leads, and manages a direct destination sales, marketing and services program, including development of strategic marketing objectives, plans and tactical initiatives, targeted at the amateur sports market.
Develops and manages a comprehensive program performance reporting and forecasting system to accurately establish budgets and monitor and track impact, results and trends.
Provides leadership and mentoring to further the development and growth of subordinates. Determines realistic goals and provides performance appraisal and on-going coaching and counseling.
Works closely with the Sr. Vice President Sales, Marketing & Sports to develop integrated operational processes and procedures with the Sales and Marketing Departments.
Manage CRM to provide accurate, efficient, and timely records including all aspects of sales activity, lead generation, and results of marketing initiatives. System must ensure data integrity at all times so that information is accessible and accurate.
Works closely with public and private sectors to coordinate local hosting infrastructure (hotels, venues, transportation, media, etc.) in preparation of bid, bid document and bid presentation. Work with local sport industry to conduct client events and host site inspections.
Communicates and counsels partners within the metro area to develop annual action plans designed to accomplish specific sales and marketing objectives. This may include the use of advertising, direct marketing, direct sales, tradeshows, public relations, special events, and identification of sponsorship opportunities.
Serve as liaison between municipal members Convention and Visitors Bureaus, Parks and Recreation, elected officials and hoteliers with regard to regional sporting events and initiatives.
Serve as liaison with event rights holders, national industry groups, and local community groups.
Oversees management of volunteer, intern and extra help staff as needed for hosting of events.
Attend trade shows and industry meetings to generate bid and event hosting opportunities, as well as maintaining knowledge of industry developments.
Maintain fiscal integrity for select Detroit Sports Commission owned and hosted events.
Maintain the Detroit Sports Commission Balanced Scorecard and update on a monthly basis.
Works cooperatively with internal personnel to develop materials for effective solicitation and bid materials.
Benchmarks and tracks local industry and Detroit Sports Commission sales and marketing effectiveness relative to key competitors.
Reports results on a regular basis to Sr. Vice President, Sales, Marketing & Sports, DMCVB executive management, and when required, Owner Advisory Committee and Detroit Sports Organizing Corp.
Professionally represents the Detroit Sports Commission at industry, association, community and DMCVB membership meetings.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
Knowledge of sports marketing promotions, techniques, and methods.
Ability to think strategically as well as tactically.
Ability to build effective consensus within a diverse team.
Demonstrated knowledge and past successful application of sound financial management, budgeting and resource management.
Ability to lead development and execution of marketing plans.

Detailed knowledge of hotel, and/or convention center and sports venues operating procedures and business practices.
Strong knowledge of tourism industry and sports markets including customer segmentation, distribution systems, and general pricing negotiation practices.
Experience leading and inspiring others through presentations, speeches and strong executive presence in meetings.
Excellent written and verbal communication. This includes superb writing, editing and visual presentation skills, and the ability to produce high quality, professional, and easy to understand reports and products suited for business executives.
Adheres to the highest degree of ethics, diplomacy and tactfulness, which includes solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
A minimum of five years’ experience in sports event industry in a supervisory capacity with hands on experience in the following areas: Marketing, Sales, Database/CRM, Budgeting and Business Planning, and Public Speaking.
Strong computer literacy, including effective working proficiency in customer relationship management software, Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Adobe Products.
Ability to travel overnight, out of state and outside the United States
Ability to work weekends and evenings when needed and to be accessible occasionally while off-duty.
Valid driver’s license, registration and insurance with a good driving record.
Master’s Degree in Sports Management, Business Management or Sports Marketing
NASC Certified Sports Event Executive (CSEE)
Management experience in the hospitality industry.
Experience developing, executing and writing marketing plans.
An established and visible industry profile and stellar reputation.
