The Mankato Sports Commission is a department within Visit Mankato. It serves as a clearinghouse and resource for all sporting and competitive event organizers interested in Mankato and proactively identifies, seeks out and attracts new sporting and competition opportunities that generate a positive economic impact for the Greater Mankato area. The Sports Commission takes a leadership role in growing and developing the local sports industry and works to develop a reputation as the “voice for sports tourism” in the area.
The Sports Commission Director will focus on raising the profile of Greater Mankato as a premier sports destination by aggressively promoting the destination’s existing resources and targeting events that will generate a positive economic impact for the community. This person will work in conjunction with an Advisory Committee (Commissioners) to support the mission of the Sports Commission, and to create economic development for Mankato through professional and amateur sporting/competitive events.
The Sports Commission Director must be a professional with a strong sales and public relations background; must be able to manage a small but growing staff and interns; and must be able to work through community processes to accomplish initiatives as necessary. The Sports Commission Director shall foster an environment that emphasizes a high degree of professionalism while utilizing exemplary organizational and communication skills in a multitasking environment.
Provide organizational leadership to the Sports Commission.
Provide management to the Sports Commission operations and strategic plan.
Proactively identify, seek and attract new sporting/competitive opportunities locally, statewide and nationally to generate economic impact.
Ensure support is provided as appropriate to grow and/or start events.
Secure revenue (i.e. sponsorships, expo sales, advertising, fee for services, etc.) to support the Sports Commission’s, and ultimately Visit Mankato’s, budget.
Manage, coach and support Sports Commission staff and interns.
Miscellaneous duties as assigned by the President that advance the mission of the Sports Commission and Visit Mankato.
Qualified candidates will hold at minimum a 4 year degree in business, sports management/administration, event management, or related field and/or have at least 5 years applicable work experience. Experience will include sales, event management, project, people, vendor and budget management and coalition building. A successful candidate is analytical, results driven, can make strategic decisions, can operate in a team and deadline driven environment and assures execution is aligned with the Sports Commission’s mission and goals.
