The Director of Communications works to generate positive media coverage of the Columbia region for the primary purpose of driving tourism to the Columbia, South Carolina area through proactive media outreach and by handling media inquiries.
Develop and maintain relationships with travel writers and media both local and outside of the region.
Keep up-to-date of Columbia area happenings with knowledge of attractions, hotels, restaurants, festivals, and events.
Build relationships with local partners and community leaders representing area attractions, hotels, restaurants, festivals, and events.
Demonstrate keen ability to develop area happenings into relevant media pitches.
Maintain database of all trade publications, travel writers, and media clips.
Prepare special presentations of media coverage as applicable for Experience Columbia SC board and other groups.
Plan and execute media FAM trips, individual media visits, and media blitzes.
Work with contracted public relations firm to amplify national outreach.
Manage RFP process for media/PR related services such as media monitoring service, database management, and contract PR firm.
Work with department heads to plan and monitor PR and media related budget line items for all departments within Experience Columbia SC.
Work with VP of Sales & Marketing and marketing staff members on collaborative projects such as influencer marketing, advertorials, and similar opportunities that involve travel writers and target publications.
Manage Commuinications Associate position including providing guidance, direction and monitoring workload.
Demonstrate exceptional public speaking skills, written communication skills, and networking ability.
Provide required documentation and reports to VP of Sales & Marketing and President & CEO, and participate in internal and external meetings as directed.
Work collaboratively with various departments within Experience Columbia SC .
Work collaboratively fellow marketing department colleagues on projects that may intersect with media relations/PR.

Education and Qualification Required:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university required. Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, marketing, business, or a related field is preferred.
5-7 years of related experience mandatory with 2-3 years in a management role preferred.
Knowledge of print and electronic media and the ability to write and speak effectively.
Ability to work harmoniously with a wide variety of people.
Ability to make quick decisions soundly and use discretion in sensitive situations.
Ability to be innovative, self-start and self-motivate with regard to projects, day-to-day responsibilities and ongoing workload.
